In modern rotogravure printing processes, electroplating plays a central role. The image carrier in the gravure process is generally a steel cylinder with a copper-plated surface in which small recesses, called ‘cells’, are made to carry the ink. The surface is then normally plated with hard Chromium to improve its wearing properties. The matter to be printed is reproduced on the cylinder via electromechanical engraving or by laser, by etching or by electrolysis methods. For normal publication gravure, the engraving process is used. Mechanical engraving usually takes place on a Copper surface. Laser engraving uses Zinc instead of Copper.

In modern etching processes, the cylinder is first covered with a lacquer or is made photo-resistant to be imaged by laser. The left-over layer is removed and the cells appear.

Computer-controlled spray-etching or electrolytic Copper removal also generates cells.

COVENTYA has many major Customers within the Printing Industry. Our objective is to grow along with them. The core of our activity is to recommend the most appropriate processes based upon your needs and requirements.
